For a simple product consisting of ink on paper, books have played a critical role in enabling the world to advance from the dark ages to the hyper-connected telecommunication world as we know it today. Ricoh, a manufacturer of digital printing presses, commissioned I.T. Strategies to gain insights into the ongoing viability of printed books and their value and fit in a fast-moving communications society, both in the U.S. and Europe. This report offers a European perspective based upon 18 qualitative interviews with publishers, book printers and consumers in France, Holland, Germany and the UK. The interviews, supplemented with statistics from European sources, paint a picture of pride and deep tradition.
